Rainy Days

Throughout my four years in Blacksburg, I thought I had accumulated enough clothing and accessories to help me deal with unexpected rainstorms, and weeks where I have seriously considered gathering two of every animal. Apparently, I am more unprepared than I thought. After waking up at 6am for my 8am class yesterday, I noticed the monsoon like weather outside and realized that I should get an early start to get to class. The drive normally takes me about 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic, but the weather was so bad that I decided to leave at 645, just to make sure (I HATE HATE HATE being late, especially for class!). My 30-40 minute commute turned into a 90 minute drive through hell and back. 6 car accidents, a ridiculous number of back roads, and wet leaves everywhere left me 15 minutes late for class.

I grabbed my umbrella, threw on my rubber flip flops (that I can’t drive in), and sprinted (as fast as I could in rubber flip flops that didn’t seem to want to stay on my feet) to class. Well, the umbrella broke within 5 steps of my car leaving my body (and backpack) unprotected from the torrential downpour. My rain jacket was really not as waterproof as I thought it was, and everything about my life was DRENCHED by the time I got to my classroom. Luckily, my teacher had faced the same traffic problems and had not arrived yet either (thank goodness).

The whole morning made me realize that I really need to invest in a decent pair of rain shoes (not boots, my calves are entirely too big for them), a wind-proff umbrella, and a warmer, more waterproof rain jacket. Here’s my current wishlist;

This rain jacket will probably hold up better than my cheap, lined one from freshman year with my letters on it. It is definitely going to be one of the first things on my Christmas wish list this year! I just can’t decide whether I want it in Black, or Radiant Orange!

Sperry has never done me wrong with shoes of any kind, so I just know these will be wonderful. They’re not as weird looking as the “duck shoes” that I see all of the soccer moms around here wearing, and they even have a cute, preppy detail with the plaid lining at the top! I should probably invest in a pair of these BEFORE the rest of the rain, and eventually, snow, hits us this season!

Even though this probably (definitely) isn’t “windproof,” I’m obsessed. I’m going to pick one up at work this afternoon. I just love the idea of a Lilly Pulitzer umbrella 🙂

Hope everyone is having a wonderful (dry) week!

Long Days.

I don’t think I realized how much I took on this semester between classes, working 20 hours a week, applying to Graduate School, and doing fieldwork for all of my pre-reqs. Anyways, the past week was spent running from class to work and studying. I woke up late last week with an awful cold that is still dragging me down.

The weather is finally starting to get crisp (well, it was for 2 days) and I’m hoping that I can wear some of the cute clothes that I just bought from Lilly! Now, I just hope that this cold goes away so I can wear my comfy new yoga pants to the gym 🙂

Shauna Tunic - The fabric was kind of weird, but all of the girls and I were joking about how gross the dress looked in person. I tried it on just for laughs, and it looks STUNNING on! It is the perfect dress to wear with fall quickly approaching! Now, I jut have to figure out the perfect shoes to wear with it...

These yoga pants have been such a hot item in our store! They are made of the under-armour material that I LOVE, and I can't wait for the cooler weather so that I can wear these during my outside runs!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!

Hokie Football and Best Friends

It’s only Tuesday, but it already feels like it has been the longest week. This past weekend was spent with some of my favorite people in the world. I could not have asked for better weather (even though the sunshine resulted in quite the sunglass and flip flop tan), better friends, and a better football game. I didn’t realize exactly how much I missed Blacksburg until I got there, and I need to get back there more often.

This week is going to be busy with work and school, but, for the first time since labor day weekend, will be HOME this weekend. I’ll have lots of time to catch up on school work, and get things done around the house that have been put to the side since weekdays give me no extra time to get big projects done.

I hope everyone had a great weekend, here are some pictures from my trip to Blacksburg!

Class, Internship, Work, Repeat…

I believe that this blog is going to become a once a week thing instead of a daily thing. This week has been ridiculous.

I started classes on Tuesday and that was a whole new experience. Commuting 45 minutes for my class that starts at 8am. Ew, out the door by 7am on Tuesdays and Thursdays is going to get real old, real fast. The student body at community college is completely different that that of Virginia Tech, and it blows my mind every single time that I walk around. I’m in the minority, both in skin color and as an English speaking person. I’m not saying that it is a bad thing, but it is certainly different. Luckily, I love my Anatomy & Physiology class, so hopefully that will give me motivation to do well in the class (and the lab).

I have also started working, mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays (of course) at night, and while I’m glad that there are not many customers who come in during the night shift, it is still exhausting putting in 12+ hour days, and by the weekend, I’m completely spent.

This weekend, I’m going to Blacksburg 🙂 I cannot wait to get back to Virginia Tech and cheer on my HOKIES to VICTORY against ECU. If they don’t win, I’ll never be able to show my face at my house ever again. If we only win one game this year, this one HAS to be it.

Now, onto tons of reading (trying to get ahead), and watching the VMAs. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!

Long Week Ahead

I realized today that I haven’t posted in a few days. I realized tonight that having a record of the fun/interesting/exciting things that I’ve done this summer has been nice, and while I had planned on not keeping this blog active once the summer ended, I think I’ll keep it, for a little while longer at least.

Kristen came up this weekend, which was wonderful! Even though she was only here for a night, it was a nice change to have someone under the age of 50 to chat with over dinner, and interact with someone my own age. I forgot how much I missed all of my friends until now. Luckily, I’ll be back in Blacksburg in 12 days, so I’ll get another fix soon 🙂

This week is going to be kind of crazy. I start classes on Tuesday (at 8am, ouch), will be working 2 closing shifts, and starting a new internship (as well as continuing the old one). That gives me about 12 hours each day to sleep, do homework, eat, go to the gym, and anything else that I might want to do. I’m also going to North Carolina on Friday for my brother’s parent’s weekend! It’s going to be the first collegiate football game that I have gone to and NOT cheered for Virginia Tech. Weird.

Tomorrow kicks off VT’s football season against #3 Boise State. While I know the odds are against my Hokies to dominate on the field, there’s a small hope that our defense will pull through and hopefully Tyrod Taylor will take charge on offense. Tuesday’s class will be either a great, or a terrible start to the week!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, and GO HOKIES!

Football.

While the weather is not as crisp as I would have liked, tonight marked the beginning of fall for my family and I. The first college football game is on our tv, and everyone is in a great mood. I have to admit that while cheering for Ohio State is okay right now, I am counting down the hours until I can cheer on my HOKIES on Monday against Boise State. I’m jealous of all of my friends who are going to the game, but with class at 8am on Tuesday morning, there was no way that I would be able to make it home from Maryland in time (or great shape) to begin class on Tuesday.

I will be proudly wearing my maroon and orange all weekend in anticipation and will be jumping up and down to “Enter Sandman” while my parents laugh at me. While my living room doesn’t quite compare to FedEx Field (or later on, LANE STADIUM), it’s the best I can do until the end of September when I will be back in Blacksburg! Finally!!

Hope everyone has had a great week! Happy Labor Day weekend!

Goals.

So here we are, at the end of August already. I have neglected to post the past couple days since I have been busy working (yes!) and taking care of the new foster dogs that we have rescued. Looking back on the goals that I had set to complete by TOMORROW, I realized that the only thing I have accomplished is painting my bathroom, which is probably the least important thing on my list.

Next week begins a new semester, a new routine, and I’m making new goals for myself. Many of my grad school applications need to be in by November 1st so I’m going to have to work hard to make that happen. There just don’t seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done.

Fall Semester Goals;
Finish Medical Terminology class
Study, and take the GREs
Finish applying to Graduate School
Obtain the last 60 hours of observation for OT
Get an A in both of my classes
Spend less than half of my paychecks on clothes for “work”

Let’s see how this goes!

Pet Peeves

Today, as I was navigating my cart through all of the soccer moms and out of control children at Target (back to school shopping is clearly too difficult to handle). In the midst of it all, I realized that one of my biggest pet peeves is parents who take no control over their children in crowded places (and let them push their full cart around, ramming into the back of my legs. NO, I am not your mother, stop thinking that I am. I’m sure your mother would not appreciate you ramming her with the cart either…). So here is the list of my top 3 Pet Peeves.

1. Jeans/other pants that are almost long enough for your legs, but just don’t make the cut. Look, I’m sorry if your legs are super long and you have trouble getting pants that are long enough to cover your entire leg. There ARE stores (surprise!) that sell pants in Long, and Extra Long. Check it out, I’m sure you can find a few.

I could not find any acceptable pictures of jeans that are too short, BUT, this depicts my peeve perfectly. BUY SOME NEW PANTS!

2. Hair that isn’t perfectly straight. Those of you who know me know that I take pride in making sure that when straightened, my hair has no bumps or imperfections. I realize that straightening the back of your hair is difficult sometimes, but if I can find a method to get every last strand, I’m sure you all can too. Have a friend do it if you have to, but flat iron bumps on the back of your head REALLY bother me. I feel the need to take a flat iron and fix them myself (but obviously that is not a rational solution). Next time you do your hair, do me a favor and use a mirror in the back so you can look perfect too 🙂

I find it completely baffling that someone could walk out of the house like this and not feel the need to fix the bumps on the back of her head!!

3. Being Late. I was always raised to be on-time, or early for appointments, events, parties, work, etc. Maybe being OCD about organization, and planning has something to do with it now, but I have been taught that it is completely unacceptable to keep other people waiting because I was stupid and did not leave enough time to get where I needed to go. Now, we all have our slip ups once in a while, and thats completely okay, BUT, for those of you who are consistently late (or don’t show up at all), you are one of my biggest pet peeves!

Organization

One of my favorite parts about this time of year is cleaning everything out and re-organizing for the new school year. Yes, I’m a nerd and love nothing more than to color-code my closet, switch out my summer sandals for flats and boots, and go through all of my clothes to weed out things that have not been worn in entirely too long. That being said, today was the day that my fall organization began. I cleaned out my closets and have probably cut my wardrobe in half. Some good clothes will be sold on e-bay, and the rest will be trashed or given to Goodwill. I went through everything in my bathroom and threw out all my old makeup and hair products that I probably never should have bought in the first place. My mom and I also (and FINALLY after 16 years of living in my house) sorted all of our sheets/pillowcases/duvets/shams etc and have gotten our collection down to a third of what it was. Going to bed tonight feeling much more prepared to begin this new chapter in my life.

Out with the old, in with the new has seemed to be my motto this whole summer, so here it goes!

Blacksburg withdrawal

Today marked the first day of classes for VT, and everyone’s status updates and twitter posts have made me realize how much I miss living in that sweet little town. When I graduated in May I always knew that things would be different, but I never realized how weird things would feel. I don’t start my classes for another two weeks, so until then, I’m stuck here killing time while many of my friends will be heading to ABP for lunch, Sharkey’s for happy hour, and Lane Stadium for football games. I am still grasping the fact that life in Blacksburg goes on without me (weird, I know), but I’m hoping that my little dose of VT Football in a few weeks will be just what I’m looking for. Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the past 4 years;
